Every year we scour the internet, magazines, forums and local conversations to find the perfect Christmas gifts for men. Well this year we decided to also post what popular gadgets not to buy this Christmas. Now these products may be great, but will not make the best Christmas gift this year.

The Apple iPad

Now let us explain. The Apple iPad is a great gadget and unless you have been on a safari for the past 6 months, you know everything there is to know about it. Also, while you were on this safari, you may have also missed the rumors that Apple is coming out with a new iPad with newer features – front facing camera. Now if you are like us, we hate getting new gifts that are outdated the moment we unwrap them. We can deal with 6 months, but not 6 weeks. So we are recommending you pass on the iPad this Christmas. If you must buy one, check around, they are slashing the prices everywhere. Oh, and by the way, go with the Wifi.
Buy Instead: Apple iPod Touch

Apple TV

No we are not Apple haters and this does not have to do with old technology, actually quite the opposite. The Apple TV is so new, there is not much you can do with it at this point. Yes you can buy shows and movies from iTunes and stream movies on Netflix, but that’s about it for now. We know there is more on the way but not till after Christmas. So put this product on hold – maybe Father’s Day.
Buy Instead: Roku XD

Google TV

Right now there are just a few devices with Google TV. The main two are Logitech’s Revue and one of Sony’s HDTV. Google TV can stream Netflix and other movie streaming applications, but since it is internet based, it has been slapped and rejected by, we think, by all TV companies, which also leaves out Hulu. You can get Hulu Plus, but at this point – big deal. So at this price, around $300 for the box, we would pass on this and wait to see if Google can use their clout and get more viewing options down the road.
Buy Instead: Roku XD

Android Tablet

At the moment, there are not many Android tablets out there, but there a a few (and growing) and the one that seems to be getting a lot of press right now is the Samsung Galaxy. Now we do not actually own this device, but from what we have read, it is a decent device. However, Google is coming out with a newer software version which will be specifically made for Tablets, so once again, we would recommend holding off for now. Some of you might be saying that the new software will be available for the Galaxy, which is true, but what new products will be available at that time as well. We would say get this as a gift if the person you are buying it for wants to have the newest gadget now and understands it will be buggy and outdated sooner than most other hi tech products. One other issue, you have to get it through a wireless phone company – contracts. Ok?

the Roku XD is a great product for streaming Netflix to your HDTV. There is a less expensive model as well, but we fill this is the best product for the money. Be sure to compare this to the Boxee Box, another media streaming device and one that we like a little more – it does cost more however.
